Charles I was executed in 1649 for his absolutist convictions (he maintained the divine right of kings) and refusal to submit to Parliament, for his policies of taxation, and for his Catholic-leaning behaviors, appointments, and policies. His execution led to the Civil Wars and the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell.
