(the Grove being a Court of Honor)

Category: Custom & Law | Type: Historical | Title: Great Expectations (in Context) | Author: Charles Dickens | Ch: Chapter XXXVIII

A tribunal devised in the Medieval period to resolve matters having to do with the practice, laws, and principles of honor. The object was to formalize conduct and adjudicate conflicts so as to avoid a duel.

A sub-division of the Court of Honour is the Court of Love, which may be more a fiction than an actuality; women exclusively adjudicated matters of courtly love, such as described by Andreas Capellanus in his treatise The Art of Courtly Love.
