His father's death and then his mother's abandonment of him and early death left a "space," a vacuum, in his heart. David readily fastens upon surrogates, adoring them in the quasi-religious way he did his mother's image. There has been Steerforth; there has been Little Em'ly, a different sort of adoration of Agnes, and now there is Miss Shephed, and shortly there will be Miss Larkins.
